Day: 225

mexico-5.JPG

So after a hard partying three weeks in Cancun, Mexico I have finally made it home (sans one bag that got here a couple of days later) and my pockets have been lined with a little extra cash. Who knew there were jobs out there doing exactly what I always do? I had a great trip, three weeks was a bit excessive but I can’t really complain too much when it’s three weeks of the nicest bed I have been in in the last 13 months.

Anyways, I realized in Argentina that travel days home are usually rather boring subjects in a blog, so I am going to give you another photographic recap of some of my favs from Mexico.

Oh, and by the way, as far as future plans; I will be home until near the end of April when it’s off to Belize to visit more Mayan history and the worlds second largest barrier reef. May is up in the air, I have the cash to go somewhere but it is still undecided (some possibilities include: a U.S. National Park tour, Peru, New Zealand, or six weeks in South East Asia). Enjoy the pics. (and LEAVE ME A COMMENT, if you never have before)

Kids Keep Dying.

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Day: 224

Day 224-1.JPG
Stupid drunk kids from the midwest who don’t know anything about the ocean keep dying here in Cancun. We have had two kids wash up on shore, dead, in the last three days because of a nasty rip curl. They get sucked out then try swimming to shore, against the water, until they tire out and drown. Perhaps this beach needs one of those signs that explains if you get caught in one you have to swim further out then across it. I am not normally a sensitive enough person to write about things like this, but it has left a horrible vibe across all of Spring Break.

Anyways I only have a couple more days here and then its home to hang out with my nieces for a couple of days and to get ready for Mom’s huge 50th birthday celebration (At which, I am the only one of her children without a date…)

Day: 223

Day 223-1.JPG

Hanging out at an aquarium is fun! Tomorrow is my day off, but I don’t really think I’ll do anything. I have some concert photos to upload, and I promised an assortment of people CD’s full of snapshots before I leave Mexico in a couple of days.

Day: 222

Day 222-1.JPG

I didn’t take too many pictures today, but this Spring Breaker was having just way too much fun trying to get a free T-Shirt.

Oh,  and for those of you that haven’t done it yet, be sure to check out my brother Aaron’s Art Blog.

Day: 221

Day 221-4.JPG

I am constantly amazed that after all this time I still enjoy keeping this blog up.  Normally I fall in love with the idea of doing something, get really into it, get really good at it, then get bored.   I think that is one of the things that keeps me perpetually interested in photography, everytime I think I am getting good, I discover something to make better.  My ideas are freshened up.  Just some thoughts.

Today was another pretty normal day around the AE beach cabanas, I was there for only a couple of hours before I got bored with the same old, same old and I headed back to my room to take a nap and write a couple of blog entries. I was going to have a big night photographing the Ludacris concert tonight.

When I got to the nightclub it was still early and I ran into the other two photographers, that were working for studentcity.com, and it was only a few minutes of them eyeballing my gear and they were asking me all kinds of advice for shooting in these dark nightclubs.  I won’t proclaim to know a lot, but I know how my camera works (which is something they didn’t understand), I gave them a few pointers and quickly made my way to the other side of the stage, as far from them as I could.  I wanted my pictures to have a completely different view from theirs (plus Ludacris’ crew set up their bar right in front of them.)

I shot for the entire concert (I was getting paid for these pictures on top of my blogging contract), getting a few shots that I like and easily the 10 shots that AE wanted.

The show didn’t end until 3am, and by that time I was so tired that I didn’t feel like starting to drink (even though I had an all you can drink wristband on).  I went home and went to bed.

As I was closing my eyes, I realized this was the third day in a row I haven’t had anything to drink!

Damn!

Wow! A Travel Day

Day: 220

Day 220-2.JPG

In search of some Yucatan Peninsula history, I rented the worlds second smallest car this morning and decided to drive until I found something spectacular. I had the general idea that I needed to be heading south, so with no map (but armed with my remarkable direction sense), I gassed up and was off.

After a couple of close calls on the Mexican roads, two hours of driving, and one police officer following me on his motorcycle for a few miles (eyeing me to see if I was the bribe giving type), I made it to Tulum; the ruins of a once great Mayan port city.

For hundreds of years this was one of the great trade centers for all the Caribbean, with natives and traders paddling their canoes up and down the coast as far as Honduras in search of new goods.

The entire city used to be made of giant stone structures carved with intricate representations of the various Mayan gods, and heroes of the Mayan culture. The city was still in use until as late as the turn of the 20Th century, and soon after the Mexican government took over to preserve the ruins.

I was having a great time wandering throughout this testament to an early civilization, but soon my stomach started grumbling and I had to make my way to find some tacos and another layer of SPF 50.

With my lips burning from far too much habanero sauce on my tacos, I wanted to see what else I could find in this area. I grabbed a helado (ice cream) to-go, hoping it would cool my burning mouth and loaded back into my tiny car to explore some more.

I hadn’t gone ten miles when I saw another sign the said: Zona Arc. Xel-Ha 500mts.

Sweet! I thought, More ruins. I slowed down and made a hard left turn across the freeway (another close call) and pulled into the dirt parking lot of Xel-Ha. There was a sign saying Xel-Ha, but other than that there was not another living soul around. I parked and got out of the death trap and was soon accosted by a older Senora telling me I had to pay 34 pesos ($3) for park fees. No big deal, I followed her to her guard shack, paid my $3, and filled out the register. I was only the third visitor of the day!

The senora pointed me off on a small dirt path into the jungle and mumbled in Spanish, “that way”. I had the ruins completely to myself, but when I say ruins I don’t mean the still standing buildings like Tulum was, these ruins are actually in ruins. But, still, I had them all to myself and was able to climb some of them to see ancient paintings and carvings, as opposed to Tulum where there were hundreds of tourists and ropes blocking off everything interesting.

Unfortunately, after half an hour, the afternoon rain clouds started to move in, and in hopes that I could make one more stop in Playa Del Carmen before sunset or before I was rained out, I set off in my minuscule white car to drive north once more.

Windshield wipers, sun, windshield wipers, sun, windshield wipers, sun.

And so the weather continued, in a constant state of flux, for my entire hour drive back north to Playa del Carmen. When I finally arrived, the rain had abated, but the clouds decided to hang around and look menacing anyways.

Playa del Carmen is a little beach town, about an hour south of Cancun, it began as a little fishing and ferry town to the island of Cozumel, but soon it took off as a tourist attraction on its own. For fear of the big hotels moving in and destroying the small beach town feel here, a few years back the town passed a law that no structures can be more than three stories tall. It’s worked, although there is a definite tourist feel here, there still remains that vibe of beach community.

From where I parked near the center of town, everything is within walking distance. I strolled down the pedestrian streets near the ocean side which had the feel of an open air market, selling everything from charms and beaded necklaces to timeshares with oceanfront property. The water looked inviting; but since it was getting late in the day, I had no towel, and nowhere to store my camera, I settled for an seaside cup off coffee and some people watching.

As the sun dropped in the sky, I made my way back to my car for the final leg of the days tour. I was content, I had seen so much today, and felt right with the world for experiencing a small taste of Yucatan culture.

Journal,
This may be my last entry… if another ass is shaken in my face for a free t-shirt I feel like I may implode. The constitution required for this job has me at my limits…

Getting Bored

Day Off For A Blogger?!?

Day: 217

Day 217-1.JPG

As part of my contract with AE I am able to get a day off each week.  Last week I didn’t really take one so this week I took Friday off, which is the slowest party day here in Cancun.  I really did nothing all that interesting; sat by the pool at my fancy hotel ,sleeping in the thatched roof pool huts and even went and watched a movie at the giant blight of corporate America (a mall) that sits across the street from my hotel.

On another note, if anyone has been reading my AE blog and has a few creative ideas for me, shout them out on the comments here.  I am always looking for a fresh prospective and I hate to say it, but Cancun is starting to look all the same after two weeks.

Finally Something Local

Day: 216

Day 216-1.JPG

Finally I got away from the beach for an hour and was able to wander downtown looking for some version of local culture. Unfortunately , I didn’t seem to find anything. It appears that this entire city has sold its soul to tourism. It is slightly sad, but it also makes me a little happy; if everyone keeps coming here (or places like this) for vacation then they will stay away from the truely pristine places in the world.

More for me to enjoy!
