Day: 332

Day 332 -8.JPG

Felicia finally let me out of the room for more than just a visit to the mall, so I was able to finally get some shots at night around Singapore.

And now she says I am just being lazy by only writing this much…

But I’m tired… very tired…

Day: 331

Day 331 (6).JPG

“Uhh… Hi Mr and Mrs Wong, this is the American boy who flew across the world to fool around with your daughter and corrupt her Asian family values with his radical western thinking… isn’t a pleasure to meet him!”

I knew this could easily have turned out to be an awkward day for me, although I am fairly certain Felicia was a slightly more concerned about it than I.  So far we had been holed up in a hotel/hostel in the center of town and all I had been introduced to was a few of her friends (which went well).  Our plans were to meet them for dim sum around brunch time, then later head to the outskirts of the island to enjoy a home cooked meal at their apartment.  Easy enough, now all that was required of me was to turn on that bartender charm and make believe like I am a decent guy.  That might have been where my concern came in.

My instructions were simple; don’t call them by their first names because that would be disrespectful, don’t call them Mom or Dad because that would set off a series of events causing worlds of trouble for everyone, try not to be excessively casual with them (which I am with everyone naturally), and just call them Auntie and Uncle.

I put on my best “Meet the Folks” face and dove right in, and actually to my surprise it all went well and by the evening I was sitting around having beers with her father and looking at baby pictures.  I think the only issue was all the posing for pictures I made Felicia do throughout the day.

A Little Info

Day: 330

Day 330 -3.JPG

For those of you that know very little about Singapore here are a few facts , which have surprised even my family members (and myself).

  • Singapore is it’s own country with the worlds second highest population density.  It is not part of China, Malaysia, or Indonesia.
  • The first language here is English (although Felicia is also fluent in Chinese, French, and sign language)
  • Singapore is the worlds 22nd wealthiest country per capita; just below the UK and right above France.
  • They have anti-gum chewing laws and $1000 fines for littering, creating ultra-clean streets and subways.
  • Singapore has easily what I’d refer to as the worlds highest concentration of malls and escalators.  I don’t know if this is an actual fact, but I do know I went into three different, six story malls without ever setting foot outside into the heat.
  • It contains the worlds busiest trading port and masters the Banking arts.

So, for those of you wondering, No, I did not trick some backwater Asian girl into falling for me, she is easily smarter than me and knows full well what kind of trouble she is getting into. (hopefully)

Still Hot

Day: 329

Day 329 -3.JPG

Unfortunately, Felicia had to work today; starting tomorrow she gets the rest of the time I am here off.  It did actually work out sort of decent for me, seeing how my body is still trying to figure out what damn day it is, and all I managed to do was one short (hot) walk and lots of napping and eating.

Singapore is HOT!

Day: 328

Day 328 -1.JPG

This place is damn hot!  I walk a block in the middle of the day and my clothes are drenched in sweat.  I have a feeling you are all going to get a pile of night shots this trip; the city is far more photogenic at night and the sun is not battering down on me.  Although it’s still damn hot at night too!

Day: 327

Day 327 -5.JPG

“That’s an expensive booty call” replied Grandpa when I told him I had dropped $900 to fly to the other side of the world to see a girl. I just gave him a smirk.

“Well if it works, I guess you have to try.”

So, with Grandpa’s blessing, now I am traversing the world on three separate flights, to escape the Southern Californian wildfires and get to the sweaty-hot City-state of Singapore, 1 degree north of the equator.

My day consisted of ONT->SFO, SFO->NRT, NRT->SIN; and roughly 24 hours of travel, at the same time still being slightly beat up from Daniels birthday party the night before.

Time To Go Home…

So, with my liver in a revolution and my gut jiggling with an extra couple of pounds of wurst, I get to return to warm and windy Southern California. Next years Oktoberfest starts on September 20th (Sarah?), anyone want to go? I think I could manage to do this again.

In other MomSays… news; I will get no brake at home, as I am pulling a quick turnaround and in a couple of days will be off to somewhere warm! (and they thankfully don’t use euros)

And The Rain Comes

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Day: 325

day 325 -1.JPG

The rain and the cold finally moved in for my last day in Bavaria. I had been expecting it for a while but it finally made for the first dreary day.  The sun did peek out for a second in the afternoon, but by that point in time I was on my third beer in a pub with an Australian and really couldn’t be asked to snap more than a couple of pictures. So thus, my last day in Bavaria ended as it began, in drunken reverie.

Cum Smelling Cheese

Day: 323

Day 323 -2.JPG

After spending most of the morning riding my rented bike the 32 kilometers around the local lake; with the obligatory flat, that comes with rented bikes (I had to wait 30 minutes while they brought me another), I felt that I should spoil myself. It was a cool sunny day, so I thought to sit out in the sun and order myself a beer and some sausage.

Perusing through the menu of the small café I was able to decipher beer (bier), and with my superb German, the section with the heading “Wurst”. It went on to list about 20 different types of sausage, most of which I recognized, then I saw the “Allgaur-something-something-something-mit(with)-brot(bread)”. I was in the Allgau Alps, it was slightly more expensive than the other wurst, so I figured it would be something special I had never had.

Half way through my beer the waitress came over and with a smile handed me a plate with easily 9 types of cheese on it and a basket full of bread. I quickly deduced that the “something-something-something” wasn’t actually sausage. Oh, well, at least I like cheese as much as I do sausage…

Gouda, Gryree, Swiss, Bleu, a soft walnut covered cheese… Then there it was, hiding under some onions and paprika, a cheese I have never seen before. It was the smallest piece on the tray. I stuck my fork in it and brought it to my nose, one big whiff and my eyes shot open in surprise! This cheese had the distinct odor of semen!

I stared in shock as I pondered how I’d go about putting this in my mouth… I cut it in half and stuck this man-juice flavored queso onto my tongue, with a piece of bread in my other hand, in case I would have to quickly destroy the flavor.

To my dismay and to that of all my readers, the cheese didn’t actually taste anything like it smelled, it was just another wonderfully tasty piece of European dairy product. Although, come to think of it, I have never tasted that particular body fluid, so how can I actually know?
